Tiananmen Square is the world's largest public square, with its monolithic monuments to Communist glory, including an immense portrait of Chairman Mao. Set in the heart of Beijing, it also provides a poignant reminder of China's hapless democracy movement and the 1989 demonstrations.
The Forbidden City
The Forbidden City is a complex of imperial palaces, which for over five hundred years were home to the emperors of both the Ming and the Qing dynasties. Grand halls and courtyards gradually give way to more intimate domestic areas, giving a unique insight in to the luxurious lifestyles of the emperors.
The Great Wall of China
The Great Wall is undoubtedly one of the world's most awe-inspiring sights. Stretching almost 4500 miles, the original wall was built over two thousand years ago, however it was during the Ming dynasty that the brickwork and stone slabs were laid.
Shanghai's vibrant waterfront district, where you are surrounded by classic 1930s colonial architecture, provides a spectacular view across the river of the towering skyscrapers of new Shanghai.
